Shambhala was the best damn party I've ever been too.

Minus the being-punched-by-a-stupid-15-year-old-raver-on-too-much-speed part. And the 5 hours in line to get in.

But excellent production. 3 days. Somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000 people. Excellent art. Awesome sound. Amazing setting (a stage on a beach, a stage built into trees in the forest, amazing art installations on pathways through a forest, and four more unique and interesting stages). Best ambient room/tent I've ever experienced. Neat visuals and light stuff at every stage. A big fucking laser. Super nice, talented, creative, and interesting people for the most part. And lots of great dj and live performances by brilliant artists (Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Bassnectar, many others...) - best psytrance and breaks sets I've ever seen. And donuts from one of the vendors!

Can you imagine being in the middle of the woods, with 8 giant screens with visuals, lazers, platforms built all around, a dj booth in the center built into ancient tree trunks, and probably 2,500 people dancing their heads off to amazing breaks on an insane sound system? And bass so loud it knocked the wind out of you? That was just one stage on one night..

In the middle of the day, walking accross the center of the festival, you could FEEL the bass from the main stage in your chest. And it was probably 300 feet away.

And though the camping was just in a big flat field, it was flat and on grass. And the weather was perfect, if a bit cold at night.

And did I mention that Simon Posford is a genious?

My favorite quotes from the weekend:
"Happy Shambhala guys! Wanna smoke a bowl?"
"C'mon Canada, Let's have a big dirty party!!"
"Our planet is like the coolest thing on earth."

    Haha.

Ahhh, I´m exhausted. I´m going to sleep forever when I get home.

I only really have two things to say abuot Zaragoza.

    1. FUCKING COLD. it was SO COLD. it was -4 degrees C. i brought two sweaters because it is not supposed to be that cold. sooo cooolldd. eventually we just hung out in the hostel because nowhere was open because of xmas.

    2. On xmas eve and xmas morning/afternoon NOWHERE was open. So we ate at two chinese restaurants! Yay for chinese restuarants always being open on xmas, worldwide! It of course also made me terribely nostalgic for last year´s christmas day and made me miss the boy a lot. *sigh...

But walking around wiht Lisa´s friend Emmy was fun and seeing stuff.. and eating dinner with her fam..

Back in Barcelona today, we went to this park overlooking the city that Gaudi designed. It was SO COOL. Definetly a highlight.

ahh. what a long, tiring day.

yesterday afternoon we fell asleep around 5 and slept for 4 hours. too much napping. oh well. then we went out and got pizza (mine had like 5 kinds of yummy mushrooms on it..), and went to two bars. the first was somehwat gothic, i got a mojito and lisa got a gin n tonic. like me, its her favorite drink. i find it amusing that our favorite drink is the same as our parent´s. then we went to a brazilian bar which made me nostalgic. they had goyaba (guava) juice drinks!! yummm. i miss goyaba juice all the time. i didnt like their caiparinahs very much though. didnt quite taste right.

then we went back to the hostel and fell asleep for a couple hours. around 5 am we were both wide awake, lying in bed, trying to fall asleep. finally at around 6:30 we gave up and got up. silly jet lag...

after breakfast at the hostel we went to the bus station to buy tickets to Zaragoza, the town where Lisa´s friend is living with her host family. we also visited the Arc de Triomf since it was right next door. it was really pretty in the morning light, with the sun coming up behind it.

from there we took the metro and funicular over to Montjuc park, which was originally built for some kind of exobition in the 20s. in the early 90s it was renovated and used for the olympics. it also has a modern castle used in the civil war. we walked all around it, up and down the giant hill that it is, for most of the day. very, very, very tiring. my legs feel like clay. oh well, it was gorgeous. you are so far up above the city, and you can see it all around in every direction (except towards the water...). in the morning it was totally blue and clear and you could see the hills north of the city, but by the afternoon it was hazy and mucky and you could see much less.

we went to the archeaology museum and then the museum of catalian art. the art museum was AMAZING. I was impressed by the quantity of medival art in the London art museums, but that was nothing in comparison. and it was all spanish. they had a whole wing just for romanesque stuff, a whole wing for gothic era stuff, tones of sculptures and peices of alters and whole walls of cathedrals that had been carefully peeled and reconstructed in the museum. then the second floor was more modern stuff, from 1800 through 1940s.

after the museum we headed for the barcelona botanic gardens, which have different sections for different climates/ecotypes around he world, including chile, california, south africa, and australia. it was neat. it was on a slope facing back towards the city, totally exposed. gorgeous views.

with already acheing feet we climbed the steep hill to the castle on top. im a little fuzy on the details, but basically it is a modern castle used in the civil war and other times with the look of a medival one. pretty cool, though the more spectacular thing about it is its location. perched on the top of Montjuc, you can do a 360 and see the whole city (its huuugggeee) and the water. barcelona is actually very much like quito or some european cities that dont have a downtown. sure, there is an old town area, and there are differences in land use and culture, but the urban form is vastly different from our cities. looking from above you can see how density is similar throughout, and some of the taller skyscrapers are spread in the "outer" part of the city. very interesting.

    now.. another nap.

    I´m in Barcelona!

I´m visiting with my sister for Christmas. she has a good friend from school who is a foreign exchange student in Spain who we will visit in a couple days.

Yesterday we arrived after a loooonng plane flight (10 hours Seattle - Amsterdam, 2 hours Ams - Barcelona), bus, and metro trip. It was hard not to go to sleep at 2 pm on arrival. Instead we checked into our hostel (interesting place with double bedded mini cubby room things in larger 14-bed rooms, free breaky, free internet, etc). Then we walked east to check out the neighborhood and go to the Museum of Chocolate, which was pretty interesting. The streets here are soooo narrow and curvy, between mostly uniformly 5-6 story buildings. After the chocolate museum we walked around near our hostel, checking out the restaurants and shops. Then we went to the Picasso Museum. It was pretty neat, they had a temporary exhibit with illustrations he did for stories, books, poems, etc. I really liked his illustrations - more simple, black and white things. There was one nude I really really liked. Simple lines, she was leaning against a table or something. The lines were so dark and strong and seemed to trace her shape perfectly. I also liked the paintings of girls with funny faces.

Then we discovered a small problem. We were hungry and it was getting to be dinner time (5pm) but all the restaurants had jsut closed! It turns out everything is open 1-4 and then 8-10, when everyone has late dinners.. hmm.. sounds familiar.. (Buenos Aires). Mo and I never did get used to that schedule, we still always made our dinner around 6.

So we just snacked on some fruit and tried to stay awake, but fell asleep by 6pm. I ended up sleeping until 5am, which was pretty great. Then, while waiting for breakfast to appear we encountered a silly drunk brit who was terribley stereotypical for young brits in european hostels. He even made fun of Australian accents.

After breakfast we walked northeast, saw a beautiful cathedral, then south to the large street by the water front. From there we walked all the way up Las Ramblas, a wide street lined with estancos and shops, street performers and tourists. Off this street is a huge market of fruit, meat, seafood, treats, chocolate, etc that was really fun to walk around.

A few blocks to the West of that was MACBA, the museum of contemporary art of barcelona. We visited their colections and a special exhibit on Robert Whitman. It was pretty neat. The collections included some written work and illustrations by Robert Filliou which i really really liked. There were also some neat sculptures, one which was an abstract portrait of some guy. The Robert Whitman exhibit was cool too. He had peices like a running shower in front of a video of a women showering, a room with four huge screens and four huge mirrors with projectors showing weird video clips and images (some creepy ala The Ring, some very texture oriented like an egg yolk on a hand or a knot in coarse rope). He also had some neat abstract music in headphones and other bits and peices.

The craziest thing about MACBA was that it is this huge white very modern new building completely surrounded by very old gothic style spanish buildings. weird contrast.

After that we walked north along rambla de catalunia and then back down to the plaça, where there are many shops and cafes. Finally, we went to Maoz. YAY! Maoz is this awesonme filafel restaurant that is all vegetarian, has a neat salad bar that comes with your falafel, and is all over europe. Its nice and cheap too, when i was living in London I went all the time because it was one of the few FILLING meals for under 5 pounds. I´ve also been to the ones in Amsterdam and went to it in Barcelona when I was here in 2003 with sam.

Now its time for a nap. We are actually doing the schedule thing right today. Late lunch, siesta, late dinner.

    All-Around Awesome

    You have:
    85% SCIENTIFIC INTUITION and
    85% EMOTIONAL INTUITION

The graph on the right represents your place in Intuition 2-Space. As you can see, you scored well above average on emotional intuition and well above average on scientific intuition. (Weirdly, your emotional and scientific intuitions are equally strong.)

    Your Emotional Intuition
score is a measure of how well you understand people, especially their
unspoken needs and sympathies. A high score score usually indicates
social grace and persuasiveness. A low score usually means you're good
    at Quake.

    Your Scientific Intuition
score tells you how in tune you are with the world around you; how well
you understand your physical and intellectual environment. People with
high scores here are apt to succeed in business and, of course, the
    sciences.

My test tracked 2 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

i wonder if i might be taking too much this quarter?

    19 credits:

    ESRM 302 - Sustainable Production Lands - 5 credits
    ESC 460 - Institutionalizing Sustainable Practices - 5 credits

the worst part is the last three are all project oriented classes. lots and lots of research. and all of them are pretty heavy on the writing. yay...

    BUT

the prof for esc 460 rocks. hes totally radical. and the project for that class should be really interesting - we can basically do whatever we want. i really want to work with the ccej (http://www.ccej.org) folks on urban agriculture and sustainability...

    ugh. stupid brain chemicals. grr!@!

why cant i just make them stop?

    i hate being depressed.

should the date be significant? its been 2 years... nearly exactly.

    but that wasnt me anyway.

    ..

ive since become content with being alone (again - stupid cycles - i was wiser at 16 than at 19). its these annoying times when i expect not to be that destroy all control. sometimes i value consistancy over periodic connection.

and have i mentioned how much i HATE it when people go back on what they say they would do, especially if it is something (unfortunatly) rather important to my emotional well-being? especially when it happens three - no, four - times in a row.

and this weekend. it seems so trivial, but it also seems so pathetic. but its just a lose-lose situation, really. i go down, i dont have a nice relaxing weekend at home. i dont go down, i dont see chris.

he owes me so much seattle time.

    grrr.

    "dont cry"

what a horrible thing to say.

so drop day was pretty fun. i think i even had more fun than the previous two drop days. i think getting to spin was largely responsible. it was way fun. i think i played the perfect spot (at the end of the party 3-5am) for my music. and i got lots of compliments :p.

now i really want to practice more!@!

brandi's chill room was so very neat. her murals were sooo awesome. are they going to get torn down with the renovation? that will be sad. kim's ceiling was neat too, the light weight fabric would breath with the party.

it was kinda funny when the fire alarm went off.. three times. at least the party didnt have to end.

i didnt really like the music in the main room at all, or some of the early djs in the chill room.

it was really neat to meet mo's sister!! they dance the same way, and play with their hair the same way. its neat they have such a good relationship. i wish i couldve spent more time with mo though. oh well..

lunch with john and meeting his dogs was nice.

i also wish clinton and i couldve ended up going out for lunch, even though that was totally unexpected.

and thank you brandi for taking care of me all weekend!@#!@ what a lovely girl.

it was a little sad, overall, because i wish i could have those people more often. but i know i cant, and even if it was a possibility it wouldnt quite work out that way.

i miss chris a lot. not getting to talk to him every night before bed sucks. we are totally spoiling each other with the amount of attention we give :p. hopefully ill be able to a) get enough work done and b) find a ride so i can see him this weekend. if i dont.. itll have been three weeks, the longest we have spent without seeing each other :(.

i hope his stuff in NY is going well!@!
